Precision Sound Level Meter
Manufacturer: Bruel and Kjaer
Model: 2203
Cost: $2000 (1973)
Description
A portable battery operated sound level meter, fulfilling IEC 179, DIN and ANSI recommendations. Built in A, B and C weighting, and Linear response.
Specifications
Microphones | ±2 dB 10 Hz - 18 kHz |
Random Incidence Corrector | Makes microphone nearly omnidirectional up to 10kHz. |
---|
Sound level calibrator | Delivers a 1 kHz ± 1.5% tone at 94.0 ± 0.3 dB. |

Operating Instructions
- Slip the white plastic cover from the end of the microphone.
- Since the microphone responds poorly to high frequencies at angles greater than 30°, improvements may be made by unscrewing the normal portection grid, and replacing it with the Random Incidence Corrector.
- Calibrate the meter using the Sound Level Calibrator. To check the calibrator, ensure that the push of the button produces a tone that lasts a few seconds (otherwise batteries are low). Connect the microphone to the calibrator and adjust the ON PULL knob to Fast-C; make sure the dB range control is set with the clear plastic attenuator fully clockwise and the black attenuator adjusted to 90 dB. Turn the sound meter and the calibrator on. The meter should read 93.6 dB. If the reading is slightly off target, use a small screwdriver to adjust the Adj. potentiometer until the meter indicates the correct level.
- Select from FAST or SLOW damping characteristics. FAST will respond accurately to a signal >= 200 ms in duration; SLOW responds to signals >= 500 milliseconds.
- Set the ON PULL knob to LIN (linear) and turn the meter on. Leave the clear plastic attenuator fully clockwise, and rotate the black attenuator until the meter is fully clockwise (70 dB) and the meter still is below 0 dB, then rotate the clear plastic attenuator until you get the desired response.
- If a weighting is desired, switch to it and adjust until the meter responds between 0 and +10 dBmoving only the clear plastic attenuator.
- To determine the frequency composition of the sound, switch to EXT. FILT with the Octave Filter Set or other filter attached.
Note:
- When unscrewing the protection grid, do NOT touch the highly polished diaphragm underneath it.
- During portable use, hold the meter as far away from your body as possible when taking measurements; anomalies due to sound reflection can amount to 10 dB around 400 Hz.
- Be sure to leave the white plastic protective cover on the microphone except when taking measurements.
