Usage of UPSCALE by Undergraduate Students in Physics
One of the indicators of the UPSCALE facility is the amount of usage
provided to our undergraduates. This page summarises the 1996-97 academic year.
First we summarise the usage of our Interactive Student Services,
which is a menu-driven system providing software for data analysis, symbolic and
mathematical computation, and access to our compilers and email.
- Active accounts: 1948. This is essentially equal to the total
number of undergraduate students taking one or more Physics courses at the St.
George campus, plus most first year students taking a Physics course at the
Erindale campus.
- Number of logins: 44,688. The usage varies with the cycle of the
academic year. UPSCALE averages nearly 1700 logins per week when
classes are in session, with peaks of well over 2000 per week.
- Connect hours: 16,426. This is the total number of hours the
undergraduate students were logged in to the facility.
Our information sub-system is accessed via the World Wide Web. Some usage
figures for our web site are:
- 155,053 total accesses.
- 482,046 files transmitted.
- 68.1% of the transmitted files were to students dialing in from home, or
accessing us from the residences or other University sites.
Not discussed here are the usage of the facility via our networked PC's.
