PHY138Y - Mechanics - Class 1 - Monday Sept. 8, 2003

We began with an introduction to PHY138Y, the structure of the lectures, tutorials and laboratories.

The field of Physics is divided into two distinct fields: Theoretical Physics and Experimental Physics. The structure of PHY138 reflects this bifurcation.

Theoretical Physics is the subject of the lectures and tutorials. The coordinator, Dr. Pierre Savaria, introduced the structure of this aspect of the course. The home page for this part of the course is:

Experimental Physics is the subject of the laboratory. The coordinator, Dr. Ruxandra Serbanescu, introduced the laboratory. The home page for this part of the course is:

Then I began an introduction to Physics and we had some discussion of how to learn Physics.

You may access a pdf version of the PowerPoint we used to introduce Physics by clicking on the button to the right. It will appear in a separate window, and has a file size of 55k
Next, we assigned the first set of problems. It is due at your first tutorial, next week on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. All subsequent problem sets will be due in the "Drop Boxes" on Mondays at 5PM. A pdf version of the PowerPoint containing the problem set and our discussion on learning Physics may be accessed by clicking on the button to the right. It will appear in a separate window, and has a file size of 48k.
