Introduction

A famous Zen story: Two Zen monks were arguing about a flag waving in the breeze, and whether it was the flag or the wind that was moving. The Sixth Patriarch of Zen, Hui Neng, overheard; "I suggested it was neither, that what moved was their own mind."

A commentary by Mumon:

Wind, flag, mind moves.
The same understanding.
When the mouth opens
All are wrong.

Today's Class

Although the concept of Inertial Reference Frames has been talked about en passant since September, discussion with students both in and out of class indicated that there is still some confusion on this topic. Thus, we began the class with a review of Inertial Frames. A small document similar to this discussion has been prepared. The html version is available here and the pdf version is available here.

We then began a discussion of the General Theory of Relativity. Supplementary Notes are available: the html version is here and the pdf version is here. We discussed material that is in the following sub-section of the notes:

We also discussed Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries. Notes on this are available via a link in the General Relativity document. As a convenience, you may also access these notes (html only) here.

Homework Assignment #2

Answer the question that appears in the A Favorite Puzzle section at the end of the Supplementary Notes on Special Relativity. Explain why you believe that your answer is correct.

This assignment is due in tutorial next week (February 7/8). All real attempts to complete the assignment will receive 1 mark.

Note

Reminder: The test is two weeks today - on February 14 (Valentine's Day!). See the About the Test section of the course home page for details.
