To the right we show a diagram of the Michelson-Morley apparatus. The light source, mirrors and detector are mounted on a granite block which is floating in a pool of mercury. The distance from the half-silvered mirror to the mirrors is about 1.2 meters. Diagram of apparatus
The mirrors are set up so that the beam is doubled back and forth four times, as shown to the right. This increases the effective length of the "arms" of the interferometer by a factor of 4. Path of the light.
