PHY110Y / PHY138Y Laboratory

The First Year Physics Laboratory is an essential and required component of both the Basic Physics and Physics for the Life Sciences courses.  In this lab you will have an opportunity to work on interesting, challenging experiments and activities, deepen your understanding of the underlying Physics, and develop your laboratory skills and analysis techniques.

Final Lab Marks Are In

As of Apr. 25, laboratory marks for all PHY110 and PHY138 students (except Pilot Practical students) have been posted on STORM.  Please see https://www.storm.utoronto.ca/PHY110_138Lab/student/ to check your lab mark. The login ID is your student number, and the password is your last (family) name exactly as it appears on your student card, with the first letter capitalised and the rest in lower case.   The final lab mark will be sent to your course coordinator and will be included as 20% of your mark in the course.  If you see any errors in your marks, please contact Jason Harlow no later than May 7, 2008.

“Model” Formal Lab Report

As a service to future students I am posting here one of the highest scoring Formal Report submissions from Spring 2008.  A report on the Torsion Pendulum received a mark of 93% and was an outstanding paper.  It is a good example of what we are looking for in a formal report.  To have a look you can download it in Word Format or PDF Format.

ONE LAB BOOK PER TEAM POLICY OF SPRING 2008

Once labs begin on January 7, 2008, and until the end of the Spring 2008 semester, teams of two or three will only be required to submit ONE lab notebook for marking.

  • At the beginning of each new experiment you undertake, let your demonstrator know whose
lab notebook will be marked. Take turns handing in the lab notebook that will be graded.
  • All students in the team will receive the same notebook mark.  In-lab marks may differ from student to student.
  • Every student should contribute in some way to the experiment as it is going on, and monitor the record taking.
  • Every student should write a specific comment or short paragraph at the end as part of the discussion of the lab, label it with your name and sign it.
